For relatively new photographers and digital slr owners it can be confusing when it comes to upgrading your kit lens. There are so many separate lenses on the market surface a vast amount of focal ranges and apertures that it can be very confusing to work out exactly which one you need.

You have so many decisions to make when trying to rule which lens to spend you money on. In my conception the main thing you should look for in a lens is a wide gap ,break (or a low f number). A wide gap ,break give your two main benefits: firstly it lets a lot of light into the camera allowing you to take great shots in low light conditions without having to use the flash and secondly it lets you shoot with a cery shallow depth of field. A shallow depth of field lets you blur out backgrounds manufacture close up or portrait shots stand out more and seem sharper.
Personally I feel that too many population place too much emphasis on aesthetics and admittedly too much on zoom. After all why buy a lens with a huge zoom when you can zoom with your feet. Ok some specialist photographers require a zoom (say for photographing tigers) any way I would much rather get a higher ability lens with less zoom than the other way round.
In my conception the best bet for a kit lens upgrade is the Canon 50mm f1.8. It is the cheapest lens Canon sell, the worst built, the lightest, the noisiest to focus but the optics inside produce admittedly remarkable results.
